From food security and nutrition to infectious diseases and crafting medicine and treatment, the Bengaluru-based Tata Institute for Genetics and Society (TIGS) has set its mind on finding solutions to some of the most difficult problems India faces. Established in 2017, TIGS is a nonprofit institution that concentrates on challenges in human health and agriculture. This Tata Trusts initiative banks on evidence-based scientific and technological advancements to prevent infectious diseases, improve access to diagnostics and therapeutics for rare genetic disorders, foster health equity, and achieve nutrition security through sustainable models of agriculture. Fundamental research, especially in genomics, has been the forte for TIGS, which strives to create ‘platforms’ through collaboration with various stakeholders, including the government, to ensure benefits from its efforts and a wide sharing of these.

Wastewater surveillance is the way to catch and counter disease-causing pathogens early and effectively
Disease-causing insects, especially mosquitoes, are the target of a groundbreaking programme that renders the flying killers infertile
The genetic method can deliver crops that are nutrient-rich, climate-resilient, soil-friendly and resistant to disease and pests
TIGS is following multiple pathways to treat and cure life-threatening ‘rare genetic disorders’, which are far from rare in India
